Goran Ivanišević
Bio, Family, and Career.
Born
on September 13, 1971, the retired Croatian tennis Goran Ivanisevic player has
been a sensation and model to many fans worldwide. His former achievements as a
professional player, including winning a title as a wildcard at Wimbledon and
the titles he has achieved through his coaching career, have made him rated as
one of the best sportsmen in the world. His interest in sports began at a young
age as a student. He was a basketball and soccer player in school before he
became interested in tennis. His father, a local university professor of
engineering, discovered Goran's potential and decided to enroll him in a tennis
school where his training as a tennis player began. Despite the costly expenses
that came with his training, the middle-class family made a lot of sacrifices
to support and facilitate his tennis training to the extent of taking him to
Zagreb, where he was enrolled in a full-time training school.
His career began when he was 17 years old in
1988, playing double tournaments before he later focused on singles tennis, not
knowing that this would be the peak of his tennis career. Pairing with Rudiger
Hass as a rookie, the two tennis players won a tournament. In 1989 he became a
qualifier in the Australian Open and played his first Grand Slam Tournament but
did not win since Miloslav Mecir knocked him out in the quarterfinals. However,
Goran played and won four matches. Little did he know he would become a
champion and win the Grand Slam Cup in 1995 after defeating Todd Martin in the
finals. In 1994 and 1998, he had a chance to reach the Wimbledon finals but
unfortunately was met by the world's champion Pete Sampras who defeated him on
both occasions. However, he was still ranked as men's world No. 2 after Pete.
Despite his shoulder injuries which made his game low and ranked at No. 125 by
2001, he was awarded a wildcard pass due to his past progressive records to
enter the singles draw. He beat some of the world's No. 1 players, including Andy
Roddick, Marat Safin, and Carlos Moya' and made it to the semifinals. The title
at Wimbledon was the last of his career since he temporarily retired in 2002.
Still, after his return, he again officially retired as a tennis player in 2004
but not before investing in some real estate businesses.
